It’s no secret that folks in these spaces are burning out. There is no shortage of important work that needs to be done and it can often feel as if there is not enough time, money, and resources to make the meaningful change we want to see. It can even be hard to celebrate small (and large) victories because there is so much more work to do.
The reality is that folks are tirelessly and selflessly working for the greater good and tapping inner resources to the degree that, in the long run, may prevent the work from reaching its broadest potential. Self-care often takes a back seat (if it’s in the car at all) and as a result, folks may even give up on their causes entirely once burnout occurs.
As a freelancer working in the nonprofit space for many years, I experienced this burnout and the toll it took on my family and my health. This is not a sustainable model for personal, community, or global health. And yet the work has to get done.
So what can we do?
First, we must acknowledge that this is a long game. Rest is a necessity for sustainable growth. It requires effort to take a moment to refocus some energy on ourselves but when we learn that even very simple practices can create great shifts in our health, we can begin to see the continuum of our self-care as an extension of our work at large.
Supporting this community is an extension of the work that I do as a video producer working for women’s health and rights organizations and educational nonprofits. It is my hope that care and nourishment for the individuals doing the work on the ground can be cultivated in these spaces.
