FAQ | Birth Services
Are you a certified doula? Yes, I am a certified Full Spectrum Doula. I am certified to support clients in all phases of reproduction: fertility, pregnancy/birth, postpartum, pregnancy release, and miscarriage. I am also a death doula.
Do you perform any medical interventions? By definition, a doula does not perform any medical interventions. A doula is there to support you, make you feel secure, and to empower you and your birth partner. All medical procedures are deployed by medical professionals.
Do you support births in a variety of settings? Yes, I support most births. Including homes, hospitals, and birthing centers. I do not support planned free births.
Are doulas covered by insurance? Some insurance and employer programs cover doula services. Check with your insurance and employer to see if you are able to access these benefits. Most require doulas to be certified, which I am.
When should I hire a doula? There’s no clear cut answer to this. But because doula calendars book up in advance it’s best to hire a doula by 25-30. This ensures enough time for two prenatal visits. That said, last minute clients are always welcome providing space is available!
Are you vaccinated? To keep my clients and their families safe, I practice in a fully vaccinated capacity. I receive boosters and seasonal vaccinations as needed.
FAQ | Pelvic Steaming
How quickly will I see results? For general period regulation results can be seen from 1-3 months. In addition to steaming, recommendations are made for diet and exercise. Stress, lifestyle, and environment can all play a role when addressing health concerns and these areas are addressed in the consultation process. Typically, 6 months-1 year for severe symptoms such as fibroids and endometriosis.
I’ve read a lot of negative media about pelvic steaming, yoni steaming, and vaginal steaming. What’s true and what’s not? A lot of ink has been spilled on the dangers of pelvic steaming when in reality, most of the claims against it have been unfounded. In fact, it is recommended by many pelvic floor physical therapists. One argument is that there is no evidence that it works. This is false. There are several studies in Asia showing efficacy in the practice as well as a small-scale study focusing on postpartum healing. Read more here.
Another concern is that women will burn themselves severely. We use the same evaluation tools to test steam heat that we do to test our bath water, coffee temperature, soup… Placing a hand over the pot gives a good indication as to what how hot the water is. If at any time a person feels it is too warm, the client can stand up and let the water cool further.
With the rise of a patriarchal system over several centuries, women have been systematically removed from caring for one another in the ways we did throughout human history. While modern medicine is indispensable, it simply does not address people from a holistic point of view, particularly women.
Do I need a special chair (steam sauna) to do this? Yes and no. Though I recommend a dedicated steam sauna for comfort and ease, if you don’t have one, you can get creative using items from your house. I will provide recommendations for alternatives during consultation.
How soon after having a baby can I start to steam? As soon as 4 days for a vaginal delivery. 4-6 weeks after c-section. Consultation is highly recommended. Though the steam plan will be most effective immediately birth, one can practice postpartum steaming up through the first year to receive the benefits.
Is there any physical contact during a session? No. There is absolutely no physical contact during the session. Clients do not disrobe in front of facilitator in any way nor is there any hands-on work. A cloth cover is provided to cover the body or a skirt or blanket may be used.
Where did pelvic steaming originate? Everywhere! There is evidence of pelvic steaming on nearly every continent in the world dating back centuries. It remains a popular practice in many countries including South Korea and gaining popularity in spas around the United States.
Do you travel? I travel within a 30 mile radius of Norwalk, CT serving Fairfield County, Westchester County, and New York City. I will also serve the Baltimore and Atlanta metro area upon request if virtual consultation is not adequate.
Do I need to have a sense of humor to do this? Yes! In our culture, we’re not taught to understand and discuss our bodies so inevitably there will be some giggling. Pelvic steaming has the potential for endless puns so let’s keep it light, people! Laughter is the best medicine.
Are you a doctor? I am not a doctor or physician and my services should not be construed as medical diagnosis, treatment, or cure. Through formal education and board-certification in holistic modalities (Ayurveda, Yoga, pelvic floor corrective movement) I support folks in their pursuit of health with practices that are deeply nourishing and support the body’s natural processes. When it comes to one’s health, it is important to access all available modalities. I am happy to work in concert with any and all traditional healthcare practitioners.
